Though known for its 'cuquello' olives and refined pure oil olive, Onil is famous for being the leading national centre for the manufacturing of dolls and the sector's largest company is a based here. Onil is essentially an industrial village, a fundamental pillar of the region known as the 'Valley of the Toys'.

The village itself is noted for its civil architecture such as the gothic renaissance Ayuntamiento, originally the palace of the Marqués de Dos Aguas.

The former ducal chapel is the present-day parish church and is dominated by a 15th-century altarpiece and, in the Chapel of Nostre Senyor Robat, a fresco by Eusebio Sempere, who came from Onil. There is also a convent, the House of Cardinal Payá, and the future Museum of Dolls.
